Fresh Milled Flour Waffles

Fresh Milled Flour Waffles

These waffles are simple, healthy, and your kids will love them! Waffles were at the top of my list of items to replace when I started milling my own flour. There aren’t many healthy choices for frozen waffles at the grocery store and I didn’t love using white processed flour to make my waffles. Now I feel great about feeding my kids whole grain waffles with real, simple ingredients that are actually nutritious for them.

These waffles have no extra added sugar–until you put maple syrup on them (:

Fresh Milled Flour Waffles

Servings: 10 waffles

Ingredients

  • 2 cups soft white wheat flour use 1 1/3 cups grain
  • 1 1/4 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 4 tbsp butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  • Mix the dry ingredients together–milled flour, salt, baking powder
  • Melt your butter
  • Mix the wet ingredients–eggs, milk, butter, and vanilla
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix (don't overmix)
  • Spray your waffle iron with cooking spray (I use olive oil)
  • Cook each waffle until golden brown (follow your waffle iron instructions)

Helpful Cooking Notes:

-These waffles aren’t sweet without maple syrup, so if you prefer a sweet waffle, you can add 1 TBSP of a sweetner. I like to keep them unsweetened so that I can put some jam on them for my toddler without there being additional sugar in the waffle itself. They are perfectly sweet with maple syrup added afterwards for the rest of the family.

-Your batter shouldn’t be too thin. If it is, add more flour. It should be like a thick applesauce consistency.

-Use a 1/4 measuring cup to measure out your batter for an eggo size waffle maker.

-Don’t smash the waffle down when cooking. Just let it do it’s thing and you will have a nice fluffy waffle.

-The eggo size of waffle does take a while to cook. If your kiddos prefer this size like mine do, it can be helpful to get two waffle makers so that you cut your cooking time in half. The dash waffle makers are only $10. To save alot of time, you can also make these in a regular waffle maker.

-Your waffle should be a golden brown color

How To Serve:
Top with real maple syrup and butter. Great with bananas or berries on top as well.

Variations:
You can add in nuts or chocolate chips to your waffle batter before cooking.

Serving Size:
This will make about 10-12 eggo size waffles.

Freezing/Storing:
You could store these in your fridge for up to 3-4 days. They freeze very well. We normally make a double batch and freeze them in a gallon ziplock bag and reheat them in our toaster oven.

This is a photo of our Christmas waffles. I bought this Dash Reindeer Waffle Maker for $10 at Target and my kids loved it! They have waffle makers for all different seasons. So fun!

Enjoy!

-Nicole
